It is so much fun to "make a gorgeous tablecloth" by purchasing a tablecloth and embellishing it with our embroidery machines. I thought you would like to read about a philosophic view of making luncheon sets from a vintage magazine. As I look at our gorgeous <a href="https://store.marthapullen.com/p-7920-historic-quilts-of-the-dar-museum-book-cd-set.aspx">Historic Quilts of the DAR Museum</a>, I can see so many of those designs being beautiful embroidered on placemats, bridge cloths or napkins. I might add that I ADORE beautiful card table sized cloths since I use them almost every time I entertain for more than 10 people at dinner. At our licensings we usually seat about 40 for dinner and I love using my collection of bridge cloths for the extra tables. At all of our larger family dinners-Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Mother's Day I always use a variety of table cloths for these small tables. We have some beautiful ready to embroider place mats, card tablecloths and napkins just waiting for your embroidery machine to begin to whir away.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Lunchcloth - Some people think June the prettiest month of the year; and when it is with us we almost feel that way about it ourselves, for what can be nicer in our climate than the days which are growing longer, and gradually growing warmer; when the trees are putting forth their green leaves; the fruit-trees coming into blossom; all the grasses, ferns and in fact, every thing, putting on the cool, restful shades of spring?<br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" /> <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" /> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">The air is a tonic to those of us who have been obliged to be under cover most of the time during the winter; but now we can get back to Nature and enjoy everything.<br />

All the seeds we planted, and bulbs we set out, all the perennial plants in our gardens, and all the wild flowers scattered in the fields and along the roads and byways, are putting forth in blossoms their variegated colors. His staff had sent all 300 ladies a white napkin and asked them to embroider it for Gary’s birthday. They were told to do anything at all. Gary’s group had digitized their logo “Decorate your life with Embroidery” and sent it to each lady. The creativity that was expressed on those plain white napkins was unbelievable!! I want you to see many of them to give you ideas about your own embroidery. I think you will love it. Gary was thrilled. He received everything from a hat to wear to a sailboat picture. Enjoy seeing how these ladies created napkins and memories for a lifetime for Gary. As you can see I had the time of my life. Be sure you look at my four videos showcasing the whole trip.<br />

Lynne Holyoake is one of these friends. I first met her about 25 years ago on my first trip to Australia. Gloria McKinnon had brought me down to teach a class of lovely ladies from all over Australia. Lynne Holyoake was one of those students. I will always remember Lynne’s gorgeous nightgown and robe made of blue Nelona Swiss batiste with the beautifully shaped lace bows, pintucks and all sorts of heirloom trims. We became instant friends.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 10pt;">On my recent trip to Australia I had the privilege of visiting, for the first time, Lynne's train car studio. What a treat!! I made lots of pictures to share with you at the end of this little letter.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 10pt;">Lynne has been to Huntsville to teach many times and has always been accompanied by her incredibly wonderful husband David. He is truly a Southern gentleman, although the Southern is southern Australia. David, a successful businessman in several businesses, has always helped Lynne with her classes that she has taught in her train cars. David has prepared the morning and afternoon teas as well as the lunches in the “lunch train car.” They love the sewing ladies and of course the love is mutual. Lynne teaches on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and sometimes she has “overnight” classes. They all spend the night in their lovely home on their beautiful estate near Sydney.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 10pt;">Lynne and David accompanied our first MPC group trip to England about ten years ago. We called it “Christmastime in England,” and we visited many of England’s great places including all of my favorite places. We had a private party at Christie’s auction house and attended an auction. We had hand embroidery lessons at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace, had a private tea at Liberty of London’s store, went to ALL of my favorite flea markets, toured completely and got to touch many garments at the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, went to Bath, had high tea at Harrods and saw three “Broadway” plays. I almost forgot we had an incredible Christmas boat trip on the Thames River and danced the night away while seeing London by night. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: 10pt;">Now, just enjoy looking at every nook and cranny in Lynne’s studio! I had a wonderful time there. It seems those two always go together don't they? Dreams and Change!! Huge words in my life! How about you? Since I love fashion, especially vintage fashion, I thought we would have a little fun today. How would you like to look at two "outfits" entitled Attractive Afternoon Gowns from the March, 1901 Delineator magazine? Just think about your afternoons. Do you drive kids or grands to soccer, football, dance, basketball, or gymnastics? Do you run errands such as picking up a prescription, the laundry or dropping by to check on a friend who is sick? Do you run a business? Are you on the sales floor of your business – perhaps a little shop? Do you work in an office? Are you a computer guru sitting at a computer most of the day? Are you a lawyer with a court appearance on some afternoons? How would you like to wear one of these outfits – complete with a bouffy hat? Change has to happen and does happen. Just be glad we don't have to pinch in our waists and wear these clothes for our "Attractive Afternoon Gowns." <br />

Do you know that dreams can come true? It did for me when God allowed me to enter the sewing business and earn my living through sewing. I encourage you to dream some dreams, write down some plans and pray a lot. I think change is inevitable in my life and in yours. Sometimes I think, "I don't want any more change." But, of course change is going to come. Now, you might just plan your change around making some dreams become alive. Then after dreaming make some concrete plans to see if these dreams really are what you want. It is worth some thinking about! I love the quote from Woodrow Wilson below. Read it and dream your dreams. <br />

We never forget her, of course, that dear mother of ours; and because of her we like to do everything in our power to bring into the lives of other mothers, perchance alone and lonely, a touch of cheer that show brighten them for this day-the second Sunday in May-which is been set apart and christened the Mother's Day. At least, I hope we like to do this, every one of us, and that the mission is never allowed to fail, for lack of generous support. If our own beloved mother is with us still, let us be thankful, let us rejoice that we are able to give her the assurance of our remembrance and devotion. But whether the best mother in the world to us is here, or beyond, we know that her glad approval will rest upon every effort of ours to make happy the day for some other.<br />

And it is so easy and simple a thing to do, so blessed a habit to form and foster, this bringing of joy and sunshine into a life or a day that might need it! A dear woman told me that it has changed her entire outlook, and filled her own life with joy to which it had long been a stranger. “I cannot remember my own mother,” she said; “She passed to the world beyond when I was a mere baby. But I always felt that I had missed something. Somehow I felt ill-treated, and I suppose that feeling made me morbid and jealous. Looking back, it doesn’t seem to me I had a friend in the world, and I had really forgotten how to smile? Then came Mothers’ Day-and I resented more than ever the fact that I had no one to send tokens of affections to. I sat by my desk, moody and disconsolate, and suddenly I heard a gentle voice, so clear and distinct that it seemed as if there must be someone in the room with me: ‘Dear make me happy, and yourself, by making other mothers happy.’ You may say it was imagination-I said so, myself; but down in my heart I did not believe it was. I did not want to believe it, because it gave me such a sense of comfort and joy to feel that the dear mother I had never known was near me-and care that I was lonely. Why, it somehow changed everything! And since that very first Mother’s Day I have tried to do as I am so sure she desires me to. In my trips here and there, whether on pleasure or business, I take the address of any mother I come across, with a little notation which will help me to choose the remembrance she will enjoy receiving. My list is a long one now, and growing; and I cannot express the pleasure I find in sending out my simple greetings-sometimes not more than a postcard, again a booklet, an illuminated text, a dainty handkerchief, a subscription to a magazine I know will help to fill the hours, nothing of great intrinsic value but all bearing the same message, all telling that mother is not forgotten. <span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;">"At lunch one day at last year's July School of Art Fashion, Phyllis Hoffman DePiano, CEO of Hoffman Media, showed off a shirt she had bought at a specialty boutique. The Shirt was a ready-made men's tuxedo shirt with the bottom half of the shirt replaced by an interesting, crazy patch if you will, assortment of modern bits of lace and doilies. The shirt was stunning with interesting textures and details that were just plain fun to look at. As it passed my table, I looked at it hard and it occurred to me that I could make an "in-expensive knockoff" of that shirt. <span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"> I am in a unique position to collect bits of lace since I live in France. Old lace can be found in the most surprising of places and I have been collecting since I moved here over 3 years ago. On my rendition of the shirt is modern Battenberg lace from Brugge Belgium (off of the final markdown table) as well as old lace pieces from Spain, England, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and of course, France. I thought the hard part would be finding a well-made white shirt that I liked. In late January, I finally found one. Surprisingly though, what proved extremely difficult was to actually cut old pieces of lace bits apart for use on the shirt. There is no replacement if I cut incorrectly!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11pt;"> As for construction, most of the lace is machine sewn down with hand tacking to make sure the centers of the larger lace pieces hold in place. The butterflies and the piece over the pocket were hand sewn onto the shirt, as is the large Grecian looking woman on the center back. To construct the bottom of the shirt, I started the crazy patch design at both ends where the button and buttonholes are. I then added lace making sure it all met together in the back in a way that one couldn’t tell where I started and stopped. Unlike the original, I decided to leave the shirt underneath intact to help support the older lace.</span><br />

A quick trip to the town's "Mercerie" or notions shop made for a fun time picking out the last of the stock of at least 5 different interesting buttons. Actually I have a quilt maker, Corinne Covelli, to construct these quilts for me but if you wanted to make a project like this it is pretty easy.<br />

</tbody></table>We embroider the child's name on a white quilt block. I cut up pieces of quilt fabrics—lots of different kid-pleasing ones—and go to the classroom. I put the quilt pieces on a table and ask each child to choose about eight pieces. Then he/she goes back and arranges the pieces. Sometimes the child goes back to swap pieces.<br />

After he/she is happy then the pieces are glued down with a washable glue stick. Joanna took the individual photographs of each child. To do this and be sure not to forget which child is which, have the child write her/his name on a piece of paper and make the first picture with the name right underneath the child's face and the second picture without the name. That way you won't get confused when the back information is being prepared. We had another mother to record on a laptop each child's saying, "Why I Love Mrs. __________." One or two sentences will be great. Sample sentences are "She makes math a lot of fun. She is beautiful and wears beautiful clothes. She is nice. She lets us have popcorn sometimes when we read our books. She makes reading easy." Then the child's sentences are photo transferred along with the picture onto a back piece. The quilt blocks that individual children make are on the front with the personalized square on the back of the quilted name piece.<br />

As we celebrate publishing our 100th Sew Beautiful magazine I would like to reflect a little. Sew Beautiful began as a pipe dream with no money to fund the dream, no magazine staff, no computer in the business—just a dream. I had written several books on heirloom sewing which were quite well received. Having been established since 1981 the business was bumping along with a lot of joy for a lot of people but was struggling financially. We had a dream of creating a magazine with our beautiful heirlooms, full sized patterns, smocking design plates, lots of ideas for sewing, techniques for heirloom sewing-in effect what Sew Beautiful was and still is. I had a personal dream to give the credit, publicly to God for the whole magazine as well as the whole business. It was critical to me that scripture and this Dear Friends page be included in every magazine. It was and is.<br />
<br />
For my scripture for this special magazine, I have chosen a few of the verses I clung to when Joe and I were trying to make a decision whether or not to plunge in. This meant selling retirement property to fund the magazine. Joe really believed in the magazine more than I did in the beginning. I was never concerned that it would be loved by everyone who loved heirloom sewing; I was terribly troubled about how we would finance it and keep it going. Repeating in my heart and mind daily were Philippians 4:13 and 19.<br />
<br />
Armed with clothes from everyone I knew who sewed beautifully, their children and grandchildren for models, Joanna in her beautiful clothes, Scott Wright to do the layout and design, Kathy McMakin to help me write, Patty Smith to do the majority of the sewing and many prayers from many people, we published the first issue, “Back to School,” in the fall of 1987. The rest is history and God has been faithful to always keep us going.<br />
<br />
God has given us the strength to keep creating Sew Beautiful issues and indeed God has met all of our needs in publishing this magazine. I never in my wildest dreams thought we would be stronger than ever 100 issues later. You have been our faithful and beloved readers. Without God and you there would be no 100th issue of Sew Beautiful. Without our wonderful readers (that’s you), designers, technical and artistic staff and faithful advertisers there would be no 100th issue of Sew Beautiful. As we celebrate this milestone, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It is truly our pleasure to come to your home bringing the joy of sewing. “I thank my God everytime I remember you.”<br />

Many people are here in Huntsville enjoying pre-days at our 30th Anniversary School of Art Fashion. And many more of you are enjoying your sewing right in your own home. I love you all. For sure. Making heirloom clothing or quilts or crafts or "whatever" is one of the joys of sewing. These are things which cannot be bought in a store. These are the things of which memories are made. So many times I tell about the Easter clothes Mama made for me and of the trips to Kennamer's Mill End Store to pick out patterns. Mama always loved Vogue patterns since she thought they were the most stylish. If you can believe it I think they were available in Scottsboro, Alabama a town of about 3000 when I was growing up. Or Mama might have bought those patterns in Chattanooga on another occasion. Whatever the case the joy of sewing is in my heart today and the memories are very vivid. I know you are making those memories today at your sewing machines.<br />

I wish every one of you were here at our school. I would love to hug each of you. Since that is not possible I just send a hug via this blog. I know most of you get the newsletter and I'll have lots of pictures to share. By the way the March/Easter Sew Beautiful is a dream beyond a dream for those who love heirloom sewing! I know you LOVED the White Issue but if you can believe it the March issue (not mailed yet) is even more beautiful. My only regret for this issue--and I have read it through twice already even with the big school going on--is that each picture and each garment could not have had a full page. If you love hand sewing this is going to be your favorite issue. If you love machine embroidery this is going to be your favorite issue. It is elegant beyond elegant and full of "dreams" and "memories." From grown girl's cotillion dresses to a pattern for a Christening dress that is indescribable. White, pink blue--almost every color under the rainbow. Wait until you see Chris Tryon's technique for embellishing a woman's dress or top around the waist. It would take ten pages to even describe the joy of this issue. And I need to go to bed before a full day of fun and pure heart's delight at the school tomorrow. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking about you too!!! All of my friends who could not be here. I send my love as always.<br />

We are finishing the packing on the gorgeous kits just for our students coming to the School of Art Fashion next week. When I tell you that the kits are gorgeous, I truly mean it. I have had fun sitting in the conference room packing some of them. Iris and her team have the pieces beautifully cut and ready. I was part of the final assembly group. You might be interested in knowing that we cut over 35,000 kits a year! Just packing a few of the kits made my fingers itch to sew.<br />

This morning I was out on a frantic search for a new song for my dance next Friday night. No luck so I guess I will use the one I have already planned. I do have a brand new costume! With a wig! You will see pictures week after next on the newsletter I am sure.<br />

I got the most precious letter today from Alice in Corpus Christi, Texas. She send some fabulous pictures of the christening dress that her daughter-in-law Caroline made. Alyce writes:<br />

I am thrilled to see that she used the gorgeous machine embroidery designs from our IEC a couple of years ago! The pattern is Christening Gown Ensemble which was Joanna's first child's gown-Cecil Elizabeth. It is a glorious pattern and has about 115 yards of lace in the gown. I cannot tell you how much I loved seeing Caroline's work and how much I appreciate your note. I remember fondly going to Corpus Christi and conducting workshops there. Actually I think she knew that sometimes I am frustrated that my personal letter can't be longer in the newsletter! You who know me know I love to really explain things. Sometimes the newsletter would be 15 pages long. Guess what? A newsletter that long was getting bounced back a lot. SOOOOO we have a blog! I think I can talk as long as I want to on it.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">I love what I do. I think if one loves one's job one never has to go to work again. God opened those doors for me. I get just as excited about a new dress or suit or embroidery design or antique dress today as I did over 30 years ago when I first started this business. I love new techniques or old ones.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Right now I am thrilled about our thirtieth anniversary party at the School of Art Fashion. Do you want to know how this school got its name? I was trying to name this 'new school' that we were dreaming up. Wow, no ideas that were really good grabbed me. I called a friend in Chicago who had an industry trade publication and told her about wanting to advertise this "new" school with her. She said, "What is the name of the school?" I said "I don't know. Do you have any suggestions?" She thought about it and said, "Martha I think about what you do as art fashion. Your clothes are not just sewing but are art sewing." I quickly said, "That is the name and that is exactly what we do. Art." So it became Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion while I was on the phone talking to Chicago.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;">Today, even more than 30 years ago I feel the things you create are as valuable as Rembrandt paintings. Actually for your family over the next 100 years I think they will be more valuable. These clothes are a way to connect your love of family with generations to come. The "world" might value a Rembrandt painting more highly, but I assure you I don't. These clothes are national treasures. You can continue to say "I love you" to your family for generations to come. Be sure you "sign" your treasures with a label or on the petticoat. Then your family will know the name and other information about you and the recipient of the original gift. Welcome to the blog.
