Welcome to our new blog! Blogs are sort of new to me but Tabitha, our young "social media savvy" operations director, suggested we do one for Martha Pullen Company. Actually I think she knew that sometimes I am frustrated that my personal letter can't be longer in the newsletter! You who know me know I love to really explain things. Sometimes the newsletter would be 15 pages long. Guess what? A newsletter that long was getting bounced back a lot. SOOOOO we have a blog! I think I can talk as long as I want to on it.

I love what I do. I think if one loves one's job one never has to go to work again. God opened those doors for me. I get just as excited about a new dress or suit or embroidery design or antique dress today as I did over 30 years ago when I first started this business. I love new techniques or old ones.

Right now I am thrilled about our thirtieth anniversary party at the School of Art Fashion. Do you want to know how this school got its name? I was trying to name this 'new school' that we were dreaming up. Wow, no ideas that were really good grabbed me. I called a friend in Chicago who had an industry trade publication and told her about wanting to advertise this "new" school with her. She said, "What is the name of the school?" I said "I don't know. Do you have any suggestions?" She thought about it and said, "Martha I think about what you do as art fashion. Your clothes are not  just sewing but are art sewing." I quickly said, "That is the name and that is exactly what we do. Art." So it became Martha Pullen School of Art Fashion while I was on the phone talking to Chicago.

Today, even more than 30 years ago I feel the things you create are as valuable as Rembrandt paintings. Actually for your family over the next 100 years I think they will be more valuable. These clothes are a way to connect your love of family with generations to come. The "world" might value a Rembrandt painting more highly, but I assure you I don't. These clothes are national treasures.  You can continue to say "I love you" to your family for generations to come. Be sure you "sign" your treasures with a label or on the petticoat. Then your family will know the name and other information about you and the recipient of the original gift. Welcome to the blog. This is going to be so much fun. THANKS TABITHA FOR SUGGESTING THIS AND TABITHA, STACIE AND SHANNON FOR SETTING IT UP!!

  1. Dear Martha; welcome to blogging! You'll love it. There are so many gorgeous blogs out there. I enjoy getting your newsletter each week. I love to sew, and I also scrapbook and make cards. Once in a while I embroider and crochet too. And I blog! Have a great week.

  2. Wow, you have a blog!!! How fun. I went to your school in Huntsville twice. The first time alone and the second time with my Mom and daughter. We made so many wonderful memories. I promised my daughter that when she graduates from college that I will take her again and we can be in the same classes. She just loved the kids school and is still sewing up a storm. (She made her own Prom dress out of silk dupioni.) Have fun with the Blog and I can't wait to read more!!

  3. Hi Martha, I was at the Tampa event last week. Once of the things I said to the teachers was that I was perplexed about something that happened at this event. I actually FINISHED every project in the various classes, because they were taught so well and the kits were perfectly prepared. So my problem was this: where the heck do I put projects that are FINISHED? I don't have a spot for those in my sewing room! Thanks for all the great business advice, too...and dance on!

  4. Martha,

I am thrilled to see the new blog! I love getting the Sew Beautiful newsletters-this is going to be a wonderful addition!

I met you the first time at the Sewing and Stitchery Expo in Puyallup many many years ago and your 45 minute demo class gave me the courage to make a christening gown for my infant niece. She is now in high school. I finally got to attend your School of Art Fashion last July and had a wonderful, wonderful time! And look forward to attending again some time!

Until we meet again, I will enjoy your blog!

God Bless You, Martha, for your continued ministry by encouraging, empowering and uplifting women!

  5. Hi Martha, Congratulations on your big steps in technology. Your newsletter says you will have us "in my purse." Does that mean you got your new IPad? This will be a lot fun to hear from you more often.

It was a personal dream come true getting to finally meet you and spend time with you in Tampa last week. Thank you for all you do to inspire us and make heirloom sewing such fun!

God bless you and your family. Jadene
